Nairobi National Park is a unique wildlife sanctuary located just 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the bustling city center of Nairobi, Kenya. It is the only national park in the world that borders a capital city, offering a striking contrast between urban skyscrapers and the wild African savannah. Covering approximately 117 square kilometers (45 square miles), the park boasts a diverse range of habitats, including open grass plains, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, and wetlands.
The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including four of the Big Five—lions, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos. Nairobi National Park is particularly renowned for its black rhino sanctuary, which serves as a crucial habitat for these endangered animals. Other common sightings include giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, and a rich diversity of bird species, with over 400 recorded varieties.
Visitors can enjoy game drives, walking trails at designated areas like the Hippo Pools, and the Nairobi Animal Orphanage and Safari Walk, which provide educational experiences about wildlife conservation. With its convenient location and stunning wildlife, Nairobi National Park offers a unique and accessible safari experience right at the edge of the city.
